Karttikeya is one of the sons of the great Shiva. Karttikeya is not born of Parvati consort of Shiva but of bhagwan Shiva himself. Karttikeya was born at a time of great strife for the Devi Devtas. When the demons or rakshashas took over Indralok, abode of Lord Indra. Indra came to seek assistance of Lord Shiva. The only way that the demons could be defeated was by the child of Lord Shiva. So Lord Shiva gave Lord Agni his seed and even for him Shivas fiery seed was too hot. So Agni Deva dropped it in Ganga by accident and was born from the womb of Mother Ganga hence he is also called Gangaputra (son of ganga) It was then that the demons were defeated and Karttikeya was stated as the head of the Godly Army.

As you can see in the picture that Lord Karttikeya's vehicle is a peacock, but you can see a naag or snake peeking in the side this symbolises that he is the son of the king of snakes Lord Shiva. Also in the background you can see ganga which is his mother. his aura is of a godly warrior even at a tender age. The bold tilac on his forehead, his glowing crown and his staff are the perfect characteristics that show him as a military leader for the gods.
