Thangka Paintings Online
A Tibetan Thangka painting is a painted or embroidered banner which was hung in a monastery or a family altar and carried by lamas in ceremonial processions. On the basis of techniques involved and materials used thangkas can be grouped into several categories. Generally they are divided into two broad categories: those which are painted (called bris-than in Tibetan) and those which are made of silk either by weaving or with embroidery called (gos-than). Be it a Mandala painting or a thangka depicting Tibetan deities such as Goddess Tara, Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), Manjushri, Padmasambhava, a buddhist thangka will always remain an important facet of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan Art.

Vishnu: Cosmic Magnification Of The Divine Being

"The dark waters of the child Vishnu’s myth transform into the grown-up Vishnu’s ocean of milk abounding in unique radiance..... Hence, Vishnu is not a mere sanctum deity or worshippers’ idol but also a deep cosmo-metaphysical principle that defines on one hand the principle of evolution, and on the other, manifests the Rig-Vedic theory of God’s oneness and unity of the cosmos....He is the only divinity whom the Rig-Veda seeks to personalise....His seated postures are rare except sometimes as in his manifestation as Yoga-Narayana, or in shrines like one at Badrinatha....Vishnu is believed to have abandoned Baikuntha and migrated to Tirumala, a hill-range in south India."

"Physical penance (tapas) means celibacy and non-violence. Mental penance is restraint of the mind and speech."

- Mahabharata Shanti Parva 217.17
